Today I want to teach you how to make a hanging pallet bookcase, it’s a very original pallet furniture piece, and it can be a good solution, aesthetic and very practical for your room.

First we need the following materials and tools: a saw,  a sander, some sandpaper,  wooden pallets (Obviously), tape measure,  a drill, 8 wall plugs,  8 screws, 8 Chains (to sustain the structure), paint or varnish (depending on the end that you want to give),  a brush and a safety equipment such as goggles, gloves, mask …

Perfect, once we have all the materials and tools needed to start the work, we need to measure where are we going to place the hanging bookcase. After you’ve located the place and you’ve realized of the space that you are going to need, you have to start cutting the wooden boards for the definied dimensions. If you’re wondering where I have got the wooden blocks, they come also from an old recycled pallet, so to get the wooden blocks and the boards you just need to get some old pallets, thinking always that the measures are going to fit into our needs! I got these pallets very cheap, they cost me only about 2 €. To deconstruct the pallets and get all these boards and wooden blocks take a look to this link.

Now we have to make some holes in the wood, we’ll use a drill to make all these holes, they are going to be the place where the chains are going to pass and sustain the shelves of the bookcase. So it’s important to make the holes of the appropriate size, to let the chains pass through them easily.

To make all the holes of the same size, I recommend you to put the boards all together and perforate them all at once, as you can see in the photo.

Okay, once we have all the wooden boards with the appropriate dimensions and perforated, we should sand all the wood, this process will take a while, so I suggest that you to use a power sander, because if you do it manually it will take you a whole life. It is also important to have a good place for sanding all this wood, and you should also put on your shoes when you are working with the power sander, think it’s a dangerous tool and you can have an accident with it, I already had one… and you don’t want this to happen to you, right?

Now you can paint or varnish the wood. Use your imagination, you can do whatever you want, so be free, crazy and enjoy this creative moment 😉 We are very close to the end of the project!

So while we wait for the paint to dry, we can starte with the ceiling. We will use the drill again, to make some holes in the ceiling, then we’ll install the wall plugs (they can be mechanical or chemical, or even both) and put in the screws, there is where the chains are going to be fixed later. When we have finished fixing all the screws chains, we are going to fix the chains to them, for doing this I’ve used the item that you can see in the picture, you can also use a carabiner, use whatever you want but be sure that all the system is very well fixed to support all the weight of the pallet bookcase, think that you are going to put a lot of books there and they weight a lot!

Well we finally have the hanging chains fixed to the ceiling and the wooden boards ready to hang and dried. Now we have to solve the last part of the puzzle, it’s to put it all together to get our pallet furniture. I did it all alone but it will be much better if someone helps you with this step. What I did is first to put the last parts of the wooden boards and then a nail in the chain to hold them, passing the chain throught the little holes, so we’ll put in all the boards and also the wooden blocks to sustain the shelves, one by one the wooden blocks are going to support the new shelves. Be sure to fix well the last shelves with the nails in the chains, because they are going to sustain all the weight of the bookcase. Do you see the colored blocks in the picture?
