There’s only just a few days left to celebrate Christmas and many of you are thinking how to decorate the house, looking for new ideas and innovative ornaments. During these holidays we spent many hours in the dining room enjoying the company of our family, friends and delicious meals. That is why today we want to share with you the instructions for making four placemats made from pallets. This DIY project is perfect for beginners and the result is exquisite. It can also be a good handmade gift for these holidays.
The materials and tools that you are going to need are: a pallet, a hammer, a saw, a lever or crowbar, varnish, wooden glue, a brush, scissors and freezer paper.
To begin, we are going to extract the planks from a pallet with the hammer and the lever. Then we are going to cut them with the measures of 35’5 cm long (14 ”), obtaining 16 equal boards to make 4 placemats. With 4 planks we’ll make a square shaped placemat.
Then sand the planks with the sandpaper or a sander, apply them a few coats of varnish and wait for it to dry. Once the boards are ready, align 4 of them on a flat surface and join them using wooden glue. With the help of a c-clamp subject the 4 planks and prevent them from moving while the glue gets dry.
Once we have created the pallet placemats, we are going to decorate them with a Christmas theme. This is the most creative and artistic part of the project, as you can stamp with paper or paint the drawings and creations that you like most. In our case, we have used freeze paper and cut a snowflake. In any case you can decorate it as you like, another good option is to use stencils and spray to paint them, as I explain here, or just do some hand drawing.
Then with the wooden glue we have glued the snowflake in every corner of every placemat, giving a more relaxed and cheerful touch. When setting the snowflake we recommend you to apply de glue from the center to the outside of the paper to prevent it to get broken.
Then, with the help of the scissors cut the paper sides that get out from the planks.
Now you can enjoy of your Christmas table with these beautiful placemats made of pallets. In addition, also you can use it to decorate the walls of the home as if they were paintings, putting also pictures on them, or form a large placemat placing the 4 pieces in a row as a long centerpiece, in which you can put the food. However, if you want to use it throughout the year, you just have to turn around the boards without showing the snowflake.
