Other kind of pallet furniture than can be built are planters, for indoor and outdoor, wooden pallets can be a very interesting element to build a place to put our plants. The worst part is the beginning, you should select some wooden pallets and extract the nails, I used a special bar to make all this work, in any case here I explain how you can deconstruct the pallets in a relatively easy way.
Cut 4 boards of the same length, and cut 8 side boards of the lenght that you want to give to your planter width.
Build two frames as is it shown on the photo. The bottom should not touch the ground, so we’ll avoid to rot the wood if the ground is wet.
Use the 4 remaining side pieces to build a simple cube, I used some screws to make this whole process but you can also use nails or glue.
Cut some pallet boards, you’ll need a few if you want to make a planter of the size that I’m showing you!
As I have used several pallets for doing the planter, I tried to mix the different wooden boards to give to the planter a more rustic and less uniform end.
I used nails to fix the sides, as I find they give a nicer finish. Try to reuse the nails you took away from the pallets when you deconstructed them, if you’ve managed to keep them straight enough.
When you have finished with the sides, cut 4 boards more to make the top as I show you in the picture, cut these pieces at 45° to give a nice end to the furniture.
These planters will rot quickly if I put soil into it, wet soil slowly rots the wood, and wooden pallets are not treated and its wood doesn’t have enought density to withstand the attack of external agents, when we make outdoor furniture with pallets we must always keep this in mind. A good idea to avoid the major part of the deterioration is to use an old plastic pot or a metal bucket, and place it inside the planter, avoiding then any contact between the soil and the wood.
