This is a good example of how to take advantage of an underutilized corner on our terrace, and an old guests bed. If you don’t know what to do with this lonely corner that we have outside our house, the pallets will give us the answer to this little problem, we can make a couch like the one on the picture, which not only is going to decorate this space excellently, it will encourage us to get relaxed outside and enjoy our new furniture.
The first step to start working on this furniture is to obtain the needed materials, in this case of course we’ll need 4 pallets, an old recycled mattress or a new purchased one with the adequate dimensions and some wooden boards treated for outdoor use; the needed tools are a saw, a hammer and some nails.
This is the old bed that we had, from which we only are going to use the mattress.
To get started we will place the 4 pallets in place, so we’ll see if the mattress fits well with the width of the structure, if the width of the pallets is too long’ll cut them to fit the mattress over. Also check the length that occupies the mattress to see of what size will the couch table, that we’ll do with the extra space of the pallets.
Once we have in mind the dimensions of the couch, we have to cut the treated boards to suit the structure of pallets, you only will have to cover the area of the bed and the table, placing the boards in 2 different ways to mark which is the space for each of these areas. Then nail them with the nails and the hammer to the pallets. It’s not necessary to sand and varnish them since they are already treated for outdoor use.
To finish the furniture we just have to add some aesthetic details, the bulk of the work is already done. Cover the mattress with a suitable mat or blanket that you like, add some pillows to make the couch more comfortable, and end up adding some decorative elements to the table as a vase of flowers or a nice ashtray. The result of the furniture as you can see is fantastic, if you want to maximize to the limit its durability, you can install over it a tarp or cover it with a plastic every time it rains.
